Congratulations to our winner of the second annual Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Social Justice Essay Contest. This inspiring young activist earned a certificate and a $100 Visa Gift Card. We are thrilled to have high school students at two schools in the North Philadelphia Community participate in an initiative that promotes literacy and encourages them to think about their own definitions of activism, justice, equity, and fairness. We asked applicants grades 9 through 12 at The U School and Tech Freire Charter School to answer the following essay question: Sadie T.M. Alexander committed her professional career to the causes of civil and human rights.Today, many people, including high school students are actively involved in promoting and supporting a variety of causes that affect people worldwide. Is there a cause you actively support? Write an essay convincing readers to support that cause. The views expressed in these essays are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. Sequoi Felix Age 16 Student, The U School Excerpt from essay: "I actively support having an open mind because of the effect it has had on my lifestyle and mindset. Having an open mind opened many doors of thinking and decision making for me. This trait gives me my eagerness and ideas to prosper through my influence. My influence is shown through creativity and logical intelligence. I am able to tap into a world of my own and learn things about myself. Having an open mind helps me deal with mental and spiritual pain. The pain I feel is a result of my mental state and sometimes my environment. The difference from my pain and Alexander's experience is that it is more mental and sometimes is brought on by myself. My open mind helped me come to the conclusion that, I believe the American Dream promises freedom to all but cultured people. Which is an idea that came about through my knowledge of historical events showing discrimination, prejudice, and racism."
